Debt Elimination

In today’s economy most people in the United States have some form of debt or another. The types of debts are most commonly credit card debt, and personal loans. However, there is a substantial amount of other types of debts that plague America. If you look at statistics you'll discover that previous generations did not have a lot of debt. The reason is because of easy credit and irresponsible behaviors. We would not be in debt if we could control our spending a little more. Most of us have more than one credit card and most of them are maxed out.

A basic strategy for eliminating debt

Eliminate credit card debt by paying off your balance. Easier said than done sometimes, so how does someone pay off their credit cards when they can't afford to pay a lump sum on the balance? Take any extra money you have left over each pay-day and apply that amount to your credit card. Eventually you'll have paid down the balance and your credit card will be paid in full. The trick to this is to not use that credit card while you are paying it off. Do not use any of your credit cards while you are paying them off. You will have to make sacrifices in order to accomplish this undertaking but it can be done. Once one credit card is paid off you can then work on any other cards you have. Make sure that you continue to make the minimum monthly payment on any other cards you have. It is far easier to make minimum payments then focus on one card to pay off.

Eliminating debt can actually become exciting and addicting, once you get started on it.  One technique is to start out by tackling the smallest debts first.  In strictly financial terms, this is not the smartest thing to do, because what you really should be doing is paying down your highest interest rate debt first, not your smallest debt.  But you can claim a huge psychological victory by paying off your smaller debts first because you can enjoy some immediate progress on them.  You pay off a few small debts and then buckle down on your spending and quickly pay off a few more.  This momentum is awesome, and will encourage you to pay off even more debt.  The feeling of freedom that you start to achieve will motivate you even further.

Stop spending to avoid future debt

It is absolutely critical that you stop spending frivolously at this point.  Do not purchase anything that you do not absolutely need.  If you are addicted to spending then this will hurt for a week or two.  But within a fairly short period of time you will realize that you can still be happy without making purchases on a regular basis that you really do not need.  Your new excitement will come from the freedom you are getting by climbing out of the debt hole.  This can even be more exciting than wasting money on stuff you don't need.

Debt elimination programs are out there to assist you in paying off your debts. These can be for any type of debt you have. The best program for anyone to follow is paying off your debts on your own. It is very likely that you like to have credit cards for emergency purposes, which is all a credit card should be used for. If you go to a debt consolidator to get help for debt elimination they will shut off your credit cards so you cannot use them. The best thing to do is to take one debt at a time. Pay off your credit cards first because they charge the highest interest rates. Focus on the loans you may have next because they have the lowest interest rate and will be paid off at a certain time. You can then work on your vehicles or even your house. It is up to you how far you go.

It is far better for anyone to become a part of a debt elimination program, no matter what type they use, than to go into bankruptcy. Bankruptcy can ruin your credit life for seven to ten years.
