One of the best ways to quit smoking is with hypnosis.  Seriously.  Now that might sound like a sleazy sales pitch, but allow me to explain.  There are a number of factors that are definitely in strong favor of using hypnosis over other methods to quit, and your chance at success will seriously increase if you understand these arguments and use them in your approach.  Really, the hypnosis is almost secondary to the ideas here and how to use them in your actual quit, but the hypnosis can definitely help as well.

Using hypnosis to quit smoking

One thing to understand about this quitting technique is that it is a secondary strategy to quitting smoking.  It is not a primary strategy.  What I mean by that is that the main method you are really going to use to quit is cold turkey, and the hypnosis is just something tacked on to help you out with it.  Now to most people this sounds like a terrible approach because they believe that cold turkey quitting is a huge disadvantage, and that other methods of quitting smoking would actually offer them a much better chance at quitting. 

This is actually not true, and anyone who understands how the nicotine replacement industry actually works can tell you the same thing.  The nicotine patch and the nicotine gum are a over a billion dollar per year industry.  That is a pretty big number so just understand that a billion dollar annual industry is really, really big business.  In order for the business to get that big, you have to realize that, by the numbers, using the gum and the patch does not really work.  Most of the people who are using these nicotine replacement products are people who have used them before, but failed to stay quit.  This is how they achieve such big numbers, and this should offer you a huge insight as to what really works for quitting smoking and what does not.

If you quit with the gum or the patch you are extremely likely to return to smoking after you eventually remove the nicotine replacement therapy from your body.  With cold turkey quitting, once you make it through the initial withdrawal symptoms, you are pretty much home free and your chances of long term success are much, much higher.  The key is in getting through the difficult first week without any nicotine while your body screams out in agony from not getting its daily dose. 

If you use the Nicotine gum or the patch then you are still dependent on nicotine.  Those who are successful with the gum or the patch still have to make it through withdrawal when they finally stop using those products.  We like to think that weaning ourselves down using those products will make the withdrawal symptoms go away completely, but this is not the case.  In fact you will still experience an intense withdrawal when you finally stop wearing the nicotine patch.  Many people stay addicted to these products for years and years without being able to break free from using them.

Once you understand this then it makes the idea of cold turkey quitting combined with hypnosis to be much more powerful.  Hypnosis will give you the extra advantage that you need in order to make it through the tough withdrawals.  But really, people overestimate the power of nicotine withdrawal and tell themselves that they cannot handle it.  In fact, you can handle it, and the memory of your discomfort is what is going to keep you smoke free in the long run.  People who use the patch or the gum are trying to cheat the system and avoid withdrawal altogether.  For the most part, anyone who does not go through some amount of pain in getting off the chemicals will find it far too easy to return to the chemicals they were addicted too. And why not?  If it is easy to quit then it will be easy to quit again in the future if you just go back for another puff or two on a cigarette.  This is how so many people fool themselves into relapse.  If you actually go through a cold turkey withdrawal and feel the full effects of detox on your body, then you will not be so quick to pick cigarettes back up and go back to smoking.  You will appreciate fully the detox that you already went through and have full respect for what a relapse would mean to you.  It would mean having to go through the full pain and discomfort of detox again. 

If you use a nicotine replacement product such as the patch or the gum, then you lose quite a bit of this leverage in your attitude toward relapse.  If you quit cold turkey using hypnosis, then you will have a much better chance of staying smoke free in the long run.
