Weed Addiction

Is marijuana addictive?

Is weed addiction a real thing?

I would argue that it most definitely is. My first experience with drugs or alcohol was actually with smoking weed. I was instantly hooked and fell in love with the high it produced. Little did I know how many problems this would create down the road.

Sometimes people get confused because there is no physical detox when you stop smoking weed. Because there are no serious withdrawal symptoms, people assume that the drug is not really addictive at all and some go so far as to say that this makes the substance completely harmless. This is a distortion of the truth. Let me explain why.

People who are addicted to weed tend to smoke it every single day. They smoke it when they are happy, they smoke it when they are feeling low, they smoke it to celebrate, and they smoke it when they have anxiety. In short, weed addicts are using the drug in order to medicate themselves. Not only that, but the typical weed addict will use marijuana to medicate their feelings on a daily basis. This is perhaps the most significant part of the addiction.

It is actually a question of maturity when you consider the idea of medicating your feelings with marijuana. If you get upset and "just have to smoke a joint," then you have a serious problem. This is absolutely no different at all from someone who gets angry and says that they "have to have a drink." Just because alcohol intoxication is a bit more acute and a bit more deadly does not make the weed addiction OK. In fact it is still a major problem because the person is using the drug in order to escape reality, just like the alcoholic is doing. It is not to escape their situation or even to escape their mental obsessions, but more to escape their emotions and their feelings about things.

When you look at it this way you can see that most weed addicts are actually in denial about their consumption of marijuana. So if you asked one of them is marijuana addictive you would definitely get a big no. They will argue that they "just like to get high," when in fact they have come to rely on weed as an emotional crutch; a way to deal with their life and escape from reality. They are using it like a drug addict would use any other drug of abuse, be it cocaine, heroin, alcohol, or whatever. Just because it is a "soft" drug without extreme withdrawal symptoms does not make it harmless.

Less addictive than other drugs, but still addictive nonetheless....

I fell in love with a guy who's using weed for self medication. He's in jail again and his family is still trying to convince the people in charge that he really needs medication. He has add and mood swings.

I totally agree that it can be addictive...I have gone through quitting and relapsing, and finally quitting for good. It takes some time, but you can do it. I have a number of hubs on the same topic, check them out and let me know what you think.

I've been smoking weed 3 times a week for the past two years, and haven't suffered one bit. I'd say the contrary, it really helps me deal with a long boring day where I have to do things I don't enjoy. People are constantly passing the bowl! But When I'd like to purchase some, it's far cheaper than a night at the movies, a few drinks, or some cigarettes! The vast majority of the people I know also are occasional smokers. The very idea that it's bad to self medicate with marijuana should be applied also to other drugs such as zoloft, ritalin, or prozac.

Weed is not addictive, meaning the weed itself. Psychologically people convince themselves they are addicted. I can convince myself I am addicted to anything. My young son is convinced he is addicted to Pepsi. He just loves drinking it and really wants it. I have written a hub "The Truth about Marijuana". Since it has no addictive properties it is not physically addictive, this is all psychological addiction. Weed users who have convinced themselves they need it, people who are self-medicating are even more prone to feel this way. They say they cannot stop, but in truth they don't want to. People who use Cocaine, LSD, etc...suffer physical pain from withdrawal because those drugs, as well as alcohol, are physically addictive. There is a significant difference. Like alcohol, pot should have a 21 year old age limit, but since it is still illegal, anyone can get it.

"People who use Cocaine, LSD, etc...suffer physical pain from withdrawal because those drug"

LSD is not phisically addictive and hallucinogenic drugs are the less addictive substances. Ahh and 1 dose of LSD is about 0.0002 grams.

Weed is not addictive. Someone who uses weed in the way you describe, ie, smoke when they are happy or sad, or bored, or anything, could easily be addicted to anything that distracts them from reality. TV, gaming, sex, jogging, playing a musical instrument.

When I'm upset or anxious, a nice long dog walk calms me down, and when I get upset, I DO think "I'll just take the dogs for a walk".

It's not the cannabis, stop bitching about it.

Think you hit the nail on the head when you describe the weed addiction to be an emotional crutch. Differs from it being physically addictive. It's just that some folks tend to become dependant.

quiting pot was easy quiting cigarettes is hard. pot makes you lazy. when you get a little older it puts you to sleep. i did quit cigarettes by taking vikoden, every time i needed a smoke i would just take 3 of them after 6 days i new icould then quit ,after 2 weeks that was it. after that time i had dream for 6 mo about cigarettes. i wish i was 25 again so i could drink beer, smoke pot and cigarettes but times have to change. so my new addiction is scrap metal. i am sort of like forest gump. i collected stamps, stocks, pool swimming, lawn and garden, signed up for huge amounts of junk mail, backed political candidates, comic books and i know soon i'll be quiting scrap metal. i think i will go back to speculating on stocks it a lot easier than getting sweaty.

i was smoking weed about 12 years, day in day out...it wasn't a bad time at all. But the I realized, that nothing is gonna change in my life if i wouldn't stop smoking weed. So i decided to quit smoking from one to another day. That was some month ago and i feel so great. But it's still not easy, as all of my friends are still heavy smokers. I also developed a website about this specific topic @ http://www.how-to-stop-smoking-weed.com/

I think most people who say weed is not addictive are pot smokers in denial. Sure, there are a select few people that can smoke it once in awhile at a a party but a huge majority of pot smokers do it all day everyday. For ALOT of people, it puts their lives on pause, meaning no progress just sittin in the same spot doin the same thing for years

i used to smoke weed and i can honestly say i never got into hard drugs this is completely false marijuana is not an addictive drug the reason people who smoke weed move on to harder drugs is because of the people they were associating themselves with

Thank you to the people who see the point that a person can be addicted to anything they say they are. If you tell yourself something enough then eventually youll start to believe it. I smoke weed everyday of my life & yes i could quit at any time i choose. Yet you dont see me lying in a casket somewhere. Cigarettes actually do more damage than weed will. The only actual harmful effects of weed is long term memory loss & thats for long term users. The millions of chemicals in nicotine will kill you faster than weed, PERIOD. & for those of you who believe weed is sooo bad, just stop being judgemental & let people do what they wanna do. If its not affecting your personal life, get the fuck over it & move on. Marijuana will be legalized again one day,& if not fuck it. Ima still be smoking it. Fuck the police! Ima go get stoned lol hahahahaha
