Instead of purchasing furniture from major retailers that is already painted in the color of the manufacturer’s choosing, you may want to purchase unfinished furniture and decorate it as you please. Finishing your own furniture is a great way both to save money and to express yourself artistically.  Many people enjoy working on projects like this, and finishing your own furniture is a great way to do some hands-on crafts while doing something that you can be proud of.  When people ask you about a piece in your home, you can proudly declare "And I did the finish on this one myself!"  Sort of a neat touch that allows you to take part in the creative process when it comes to decorating and furnishing your home.

Unfinished Wood Furniture

Many furniture vendors sell pieces that have been mass-produced, which diminishes both the craftsmanship and the originality of the furniture. On the other hand, unfinished wood furniture craftsmen can focus all of their energies and finances on creating bare wood pieces that are of fine quality. When you purchase unfinished wood furniture, there is not paint to cover up flaws in either wood quality or craftsmanship. Therefore, you can make an informed selection and feel confident in the piece that you choose to bring home and finish yourself. Staining, stenciling or covering your furniture with a solid color can be a fun project. It also gives you complete artistic control over the finished product and an ability to match the overall color scheme in any room with perfect accuracy.  Wood is easy to paint and varnish and this requires no real special ability or expensive materials, just some hard work and patience on your part.  If you are willing to put in the effort, you can easily create a nice finish on a piece of furniture.

Unfinished Pine Furniture

Whether you are going for a quaint country feel or an urban edgy vibe, unfinished pine furniture can help you to complete your overall interior design goals. It can be purchased in more rough-hewn and rustic styles or in refined and sleek styles. Pine takes kindly to most finishes and is easy to stain or paint. In addition, many people choose to leave unfinished pine furniture in its natural state instead of finishing it, therefore lending a more industrial or raw feel to the environment. Pine is known for its light color and the darker colored knots that permeate the grain. Furniture makers of every discipline enjoy working with pine, as it is less expensive and easier to work with than many other types of wood.  This makes it sort of a general purpose, all around good material to work with.  In addition, pine is usually a little cheaper than some other types of wood furniture, so you can save a little money if you go this route as well.

Unfinished Oak Furniture

Oak is a heavier wood than pine and is known for being one of the most durable materials from which to make furniture. Unfinished oak furniture is a great choice for families that have young children or a large number of houseguests, as it is more difficult to damage oak than it is to scar and dent other species of wood. In addition, oak is known for being very easy to both stain and varnish. While unfinished oak furniture tends to be more expensive than furniture made from other types of wood, it is likely to stay in great shape for many years to come.  If you are buying furniture for the long haul and expect to use it for several decades or even more, then consider investing in oak furniture.

Unfinished furniture is a great option for decorating schemes of all kinds and can provide individuals with a creative outlet for expression. In addition, the quality of unfinished wood furniture tends to be better than finished furniture pieces because of the fact that there is no way to “cover” flaws in craftsmanship under a thick layer of paint.
