There are a number of things that you need to do in order to overcome addictive drugs.

First of all you need to make a firm decision.  If you are not adamant about your decision to quit then you are never going to have the guts to actually follow through with getting clean and sober.

So how do you make a decision?  First of all you might need to hit bottom first.  This means that if things are actually going pretty decent in your life in spite of your addiction, that you are not likely to make the decision to get clean at that time.  It is simply too inconvenient, too monumental of a change.  Instead, the decision to enter recovery can only come when the chips are down and your life is not doing well.

Once you finally make the decision to try to change your life, then you need to take action.  In fact, action is the entire key to your whole recovery experience.  For most people this will mean that they have to start out by asking for help.  If we could quit drugs on our own then there would be no need for treatment centers or drug rehabs or group therapy programs.   The fact of the matter is that we need help in order to recover so one of your first steps should be to ask for help.

After you have asked for help from your friends or loved ones, you might be directed towards some sort of professional treatment services.  The most popular option for this is going to be residential, in-patient treatment at a drug rehab center.  This will generally include a medical detox as well, followed by about 2 weeks or so in a residential program.  There you will attend lectures, group therapy, and usually 12 step meetings as well.  There are some treatment centers that are not 12 step based but they are few and far between compared to those that are.

After you leave treatment then the real challenge begins, as almost anyone can stay clean and sober for a few weeks when they are trapped in a controlled environment.  Once you are back out in the real world the you have the challenge of actually living a real life without drugs and alcohol.  The best way to do this is to find a way to live with passion and purpose, so that you can regain your self esteem and find a new life for yourself.
