Addiction Help Tips for Recovery

By Recovery Guy

I thought it would be good to compile some of the better tips that I have used throughout my own recovery here.

Please note that this is not just repeated dribble that I have heard in traditional recovery circles; instead, this are the actual strategies and techniques that have been keeping me clean and sober for the last 8 years plus.

1) Avoid dogmatic programs and focus on action - this is a huge tip that almost nobody gets right in the beginning, which is fine. You will come to learn this information on your own. Basically what I am saying here is that there is no magic in any program of recovery, there is no secret sauce in following one recovery program or another....instead it is all about action. If you put in the work and the effort you will find success in recovery. Figuring out the correct actions to take in recovery is actually pretty easy. Things such as not using drugs and alcohol, being nice to others, and forming new friendships with others in recovery--these are some really basic principles and they do not require a program to follow them. Some people get so wrapped up in a specific program of recovery and they tend to elevate it to cult status. This is not necessary and will actually detract from your path to recovery and learning how to overcome fioricet addiction.

2) Find your own path to recovery with a holistic approach - does that sound like a bunch of crap? It's not. Everyone in traditional recovery circles is constantly harping: "The solution is spiritual." In fact, it is not. Spirituality is only one part of the solution. In fact the solution to overcoming addiction is holistic in nature. That means it is much bigger than just a spiritual solution, but it also includes spirituality. For example, think about this: did our addiction not affect us physically, socially, mentally, and emotionally? Yes, of course it did. So why would we ignore these facets of our recovery and focus only on a spiritual solution? This approach doesn't make sense. The real secret to successful recovery is to take a holistic approach that addresses all of these areas of your life. If you take only one addiction help tip out of this article, make it this one, and your recovery will be that much stronger for it.

3) The only long term threat is complacency. Overcome this with a commitment to personal growth - many people string together a few weeks or months of recovery, only to fall back into their old patterns of behavior and eventually relapse. Why does this happen? It happens when people stop growing. Figuring out how to live without drugs and alcohol is actually the easy part. Figuring out how to live the rest of your life sober without going crazy is the hard part. People erroneously believe that after we pass a year or two of sobriety that we are home free. In fact, many people in recovery relapse all the time who have achieved significant periods of clean time.

The only way to really overcome this is by pushing yourself to grow and learn on a consistent basis. We will all find different ways to go about finding this path for ourselves. Therefore, no one can tell you exactly how to recover....you must discover much of the path on your own.
